The Landscaping of the Office

When people hear or see the word “landscape”, they usually think of the visible features of an area of land or countryside.  However, with the “office” word being applied, this maps out a new territory and vision.

The phrase “office landscape” refers to an office being created in a manner that is both pleasing to the eye, and also being of a comfortable interior design in which people find themselves in much more pleasant and enjoyable surroundings than offices of the past. This involves desk and furniture placement, natural lighting, the arrangement of plants and works of art, all helping to create an ambient work setting.

Post War Development

Not long after the Second World War, office landscaping was developed by designers in Germany. In the West, (including the United States and Canada) the European design was the traditional one used in which the basic set up was made of two parts and they were rows of work desks for the average office worker and closed offices for executives and management.


This was the German name given to an experiment in the introduction of a more open and congenial office space layout. The early designers exercised placing most staff into common areas where the desks were not placed in rows, but in a much more free-flowing environment. Privacy was attained with the use of dividers, which also allowed light and a freer feel than the use of walls ever did. This in itself was revolutionary, as it enhanced collaboration and communication, and with time helped to promote much better teamwork with employees. The original German concept is still the trend in office design today.
