Commissioned maquettes of 14 iconic American properties, from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water to Jefferson’s Monticello, converse to quintessential American architectural precepts of construction. Next to these—in a set-up similar to Rem’s Elements—are full-scale, “please touch” mock-ups of materials and structural systems used to build houses, from glass curtain partitions to balloon-frames. Just reverse the room, in a piece referred to as “Living at Home,” the exhibit makes its most poignant statement.
A series of six films use historic pictures to animate the daily duties such as laundry and cooking that make a house work. In one other gallery, a large-scale, two-display screen film presentation takes visitors inside a variety of contemporary architect-designed homes.
